Trivago N.V. ADS (NASDAQ:TRVG) reported third-quarter revenue growth of 16% year over year to EUR 192.5 million, marking its seventh consecutive quarter of double-digit growth. The company posted net income of EUR 5.4 million and Adjusted EBITDA of EUR 18.7 million, which management said was its highest quarterly Adjusted EBITDA since the current leadership team returned in mid-2023.
Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Johannes Thomas said the company exceeded its expectations on both revenue and profitability during the period. He attributed the performance to stronger branded traffic, improved hotel-search conversion, growing member engagement and continued development of its partner marketplace.
Regional growth offset pressure in Rest of World
Referral revenue in both the Americas and Developed Europe increased 15% year over year. Chief Financial Officer and Managing Director Wolf Schmuhl said growth in those regions was supported by branded-channel traffic, marketing efficiency, stronger conversion and compounding returns from earlier brand investments.
Rest of World referral revenue declined 10%, reflecting approximately 4% of foreign-exchange headwinds and effects from the Middle East conflict. Schmuhl said the company adjusted bidding spend and targets locally in response. Rest of World accounted for 17% of third-quarter referral revenue, limiting the impact on the overall business, according to the company.
Branded traffic referral revenue again grew faster than total referral revenue, Thomas said. The company’s conversion rate has increased 50% since the third quarter of 2023 and was also meaningfully higher than a year earlier. Before intersegment eliminations, logged-in members generated more than 35% of referral revenue.
Marketing investment increased while global ROAS remained stable
Total expenses rose EUR 29 million year over year to EUR 182.4 million. Selling and marketing expense increased EUR 17.3 million, primarily due to higher brand-marketing investment and incremental costs associated with the consolidation of trivago DEALS.
Trivago core advertising spending rose EUR 10.3 million, or 23%, in the Americas and EUR 8.2 million, or 16%, in Developed Europe. Spending fell EUR 3.3 million, or 12%, in Rest of World.
Despite the increase in brand investment, global trivago core return on ad spend, or ROAS, was broadly stable at 133.2%, compared with 134.1% in the third quarter of 2025. Americas ROAS declined to 129% from 135.4%, as the company increased investment amid what Schmuhl described as favorable marketing conditions and elasticities. Developed Europe ROAS increased to 142% from 141.2%, while Rest of World ROAS improved to 122.1% from 119.2% despite lower advertising spend, foreign-exchange pressure and the Middle East conflict.
Thomas said a lower ROAS in a given quarter is not necessarily negative when the company sees attractive opportunities to increase brand investment, because returns can extend into later quarters and years. He said the company expects to continue investing in brand marketing at a more moderate pace than in prior years.
Product, membership and marketplace initiatives
Thomas said the company unified its iOS and Android app codebases and launched a single global app in mid-October. He said the shared app was rebuilt using a largely AI-driven development process, with AI writing nearly all of the new codebase. The company estimated that the work would have taken 12 to 18 months under traditional engineering processes but was completed in four months, followed by two months of production qualification.
The company also cited changes to hotel ranking, price presentation, personalization, hotel content and filters as contributors to conversion gains. Trivago has updated AI-generated hotel highlights and review summaries, while its Smart AI Search backend has been rebuilt to improve speed and accuracy for travelers using natural-language search requests.
The company said its member program is becoming more important as hotel chains and booking sites provide loyalty and member-only rates to trivago users. Thomas said customer relationship management revenue grew at a high pace during the quarter, as the company reaches members through channels such as email and app notifications without dedicated marketing costs.
Marketplace diversification also continued. “All other advertisers” accounted for 35% of referral revenue, up from 26% a year earlier. Trivago Book & Go, the company’s partner-powered booking funnel, more than doubled its referral-revenue share year over year before intersegment eliminations and became a top-five player in the company’s marketplace.
Guidance and views on Google and AI traffic
Trivago maintained its full-year 2026 outlook for mid-teens percentage total revenue growth and Adjusted EBITDA of about EUR 30 million. For 2027, management expects double-digit revenue growth and Adjusted EBITDA of approximately EUR 45 million. The company continues to target a 10% Adjusted EBITDA margin by 2028.
Schmuhl said the company held EUR 139.9 million in cash equivalents and short-term investments at quarter-end and had no long-term debt. He added that management believes the company’s share price understates its long-term earnings potential and said trivago plans to continue its share repurchase program.
Addressing Google’s European changes related to the Digital Markets Act, Thomas said trivago had not measured a major near-term business impact. He said Google’s new format for displaying hotel booking sites and aggregators represents a more level playing field, though he added that trivago does not believe Google is fully compliant because some search-result components remain.
Traffic and revenue from AI-agent channels remained “significantly below 1%” of referral revenue, Thomas said. While the company saw renewed growth in AI referral revenue during the third quarter after activity plateaued or declined somewhat earlier in the year, management views AI assistants primarily as complementary tools for travel inspiration and discovery. Thomas said trivago is collaborating with major AI labs and has joined OpenAI’s paid ads program.
