Transocean (NYSE: RIG) wins $550 million in drillship contracts

What happened

Transocean Ltd. (NYSE: RIG) said it won contract awards for two ultra-deepwater drillships in the U.S. Gulf. In aggregate, the fixtures represent approximately $550 million in firm contract backlog. The Deepwater Proteus received a ten-well contract with an undisclosed operator, and the estimated 700-day campaign is expected to contribute approximately $325 million in backlog. That work is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2027 in direct continuation of the rig's current U.S. Gulf contract.

Both awards are direct continuations of existing work, with Proteus staying in the U.S. Gulf and Conqueror following its program in Equatorial Guinea. The Deepwater Conqueror received a five-well contract with another undisclosed operator, and the estimated 450 days of work is expected to contribute approximately $225 million in backlog, excluding mobilization fees. That campaign is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2027 in direct continuation of the rig's program in Equatorial Guinea.

Why it matters

OptimistFi's case is that scarce deepwater capacity creates value only if stronger demand turns into backlog and then cash and debt reduction. This filing strengthens that view by adding approximately $550 million of firm backlog, but it still stops at backlog rather than cash or debt reduction. The combined award size breaks into two contracts, with $325 million tied to Proteus and $225 million to Conqueror.

The larger Proteus award represents about 59.1% of the total, so the near-term value hinges on both campaigns starting on schedule. The strongest caveat is the filing's own timing, since the Conqueror backlog excludes mobilization fees and both awards are staged into 2027. If either award slips, the backlog headline would stay intact, but the timing of cash conversion would weaken.

What's next

Proteus is expected to start in the first quarter of 2027, and Conqueror is expected to start in the third quarter of 2027. A first-quarter 2027 start for Proteus would support the backlog conversion story, while any delay would weaken it.
