What happened
Shares of Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMD) closed at $615.73 on October 1. That was up 187.5% from the December 31, 2025 close of $214.16.
The business moved in the same direction. Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMD) more than doubled second-quarter Data Center revenue, launched its first rack-scale AI system and collected large deployment commitments from major model builders and cloud customers.
The price record cannot separate reported growth from future expectations, acquisition news, sector momentum or trading flows. The useful question is whether the business evidence can carry the higher burden created by a near-tripling of the shares.

The move in numbers
Dividing the October 1 close by the December 31 close and subtracting one gives 187.5093%. Yahoo returned no split event during the period. Alpaca's IEX feed showed $214.12 and $615.78, producing 187.6% and confirming the direction and scale.
Second-quarter revenue reached $11.536 billion, up 50% from a year earlier. Data Center revenue was $6.718 billion, up 107%, and represented about 58% of company revenue. GAAP gross margin reached 54% and free cash flow was $1.558 billion.
The first half matters more than one quarter. Adding first- and second-quarter Data Center revenue gives $12.518 billion. That equals 75.4% of the $16.6 billion the segment produced in all of 2025, a simple measure of how quickly the mix changed.
The customer commitments are larger than the reported numbers but less certain. Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ: META) agreed to deploy up to six gigawatts of Instinct GPUs, and Anthropic agreed to deploy up to two gigawatts. These are planned maximums, not booked revenue.
The Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ: META) agreement also carries a performance-based warrant for up to 160 million shares. That maximum equals 9.8% of the 1.630 billion common shares outstanding on January 30. Vesting depends on shipment, technical, commercial and stock-price conditions, so the calculation measures potential scale rather than certain dilution.

How Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMD) makes money
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMD) is a fabless chip designer. It designs CPUs, GPUs, adaptive chips, networking products and software, while outside manufacturers supply the expensive fabrication capacity. That model keeps capital spending below the cost of owning leading-edge factories, but it also creates supply and manufacturing dependencies.
Data Center sells EPYC server CPUs, Instinct accelerators and the networking and software needed to run them. Client and Gaming sells Ryzen PC processors, Radeon graphics and semi-custom console chips. Embedded includes the adaptive-computing portfolio built around Xilinx products.
Helios packages 72 MI455X GPUs, 18 sixth-generation EPYC CPUs, networking and ROCm software into one rack-scale design. Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMD) says the system can deliver up to 30% more inference tokens per dollar than the leading competitive solution. That is an issuer benchmark, and customer economics still need independent production evidence.
NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) remains the main accelerator and software rival. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) competes in server and client CPUs, while large cloud companies also design more of their own silicon. Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMD) estimates that AI will expand its total addressable compute market to about $2 trillion in 2030. That is management's market estimate, not a revenue forecast.
The strategy is to offer customers an open alternative across CPUs, GPUs, networking and software. The advantage is choice and competitive tension. The obstacle is that a complete system must arrive on time, perform in real workloads and be easy enough to deploy that customers move beyond trial capacity.
Why the case is still difficult
Reported economics are improving, but expectations moved faster. First-half free cash flow was $4.124 billion, a 19% margin. Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMD) now has to preserve that conversion while funding a wider hardware and software roadmap.
The September 28 agreement to buy World Labs adds another test. The all-stock transaction is valued at about $8.2 billion, almost twice first-half free cash flow. That comparison shows strategic scale, although the consideration is stock rather than cash and the final share impact will depend on closing terms and market value.
The strongest bull argument is that the partnerships are evidence of real customer diversification. Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ: META), Anthropic and OpenAI are working on deployments, and the first MI355X infrastructure with HUMAIN was already live by August 31. A second platform can be valuable even without taking the majority of the market.
The countercase is that commitments can slip, software adoption can lag and competitive pricing can turn impressive volume into weaker margins. The World Labs deal and the Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ: META) warrant also mean owners should judge growth per share, not just revenue growth.
What's next
Start with the next quarterly report. Management guided to about $13.0 billion of third-quarter revenue, plus or minus $300 million, with a non-GAAP gross margin of about 56%. Compare the result with GAAP margin, Data Center growth and free cash flow.
Then follow deployment evidence. Shipments for the first gigawatt under the Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ: META) agreement were scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026, while OpenAI expected to bring Helios online in the fourth quarter. Named systems going live matter more than another maximum-capacity announcement.
The case strengthens if those deployments become recognized revenue while margins and cash conversion hold. It weakens if shipment timing slips, competitive pricing absorbs the growth or share issuance outpaces per-share earnings. A 187.5% gain leaves less room for promises that do not become economics.
