BP (NYSE: BP) sells Aker BP stake and lifts 2026 proceeds guidance

What happened

BP p.l.c. (NYSE: BP) sold 5% of its 15.9% shareholding in Aker BP, the leading independent Norwegian oil and gas producer, for about $1.06 billion in gross proceeds. The cash will strengthen BP's balance sheet and the update lifts full-year 2026 divestment and other proceeds guidance to around $9 billion. The shares changed hands at NOK 311 each, according to the filing.

BP said that is about $1 billion higher than previously guided. After the sale, BP holds 68.7 million shares in Aker BP. That leaves an approximate 10.9% interest and starts a 90-day lock-up on the remaining stake.

Why it matters

OptimistFi has argued that BP's scale and integration turn cyclical hydrocarbon markets into cash that funds shareholder returns and a gradual pivot to lower-carbon businesses. This filing supports that view by adding near-term proceeds and showing BP can still monetize a holding while keeping a meaningful residual stake.

OptimistFi's comparison shows the sale proceeds equal 11.8% of the updated full-year guidance, a sizeable share for a single transaction. That places this transaction inside a broader divestment plan rather than as a stand-alone step. The comparison also shows the sale alone cannot explain the whole guidance increase, because the filing groups divestment and other proceeds together in one figure.

That matters for holders because the filing ties the cash directly to balance-sheet strength, not to any new operating forecast. The residual Aker BP position still leaves BP exposed to the value of that asset and to any later sale. OptimistFi sees that as supportive, because the filing shows BP can recycle capital without giving up the entire position.

What's next

The next test is whether BP sells more of the remaining Aker BP shares when the lock-up ends. Another sale would add to divestment proceeds and reinforce the balance-sheet story, while no further sale would leave this update tied to a single transaction.
