What happened
Stanley Black & Decker, Inc. (NYSE: SWK) raised its 2026 earnings and cash flow guidance and authorized up to $1 billion more in buybacks.
Tariff refunds did part of the work. Diluted EPS of $1.83 and adjusted EPS of $2.31 both included a $0.67 per share benefit from net tariff refunds. That figure is after related incentive pay, growth investments and, for EPS, taxes. Without it, OptimistFi calculates, adjusted EPS would be $1.64, against $1.43 a year earlier.
Net sales were $3.7 billion, down 1% from a year earlier and up 4% organically. Volume rose 6%, pricing fell 2% and portfolio changes took off 4%. Currency was flat. The company said the volume strength came mainly from U.S. retail and commercial industrial channels in Tools & Outdoor.

Where the tariff refunds show up
Margins show the refunds most clearly. Gross margin was 39.0%, up 760 basis points from a year earlier. The company said net tariff refunds contributed approximately 430 basis points. That leaves a gain of 330 basis points before the refunds, by OptimistFi's calculation.
Tools & Outdoor, the larger segment, earned a 17.0% segment margin, up 520 basis points. The company credited net productivity gains and favorable product mix, along with the refunds. SG&A rose to 24.2% of sales, up 310 basis points. The company tied that to extra costs and investments linked to the refunds.

Why it matters
OptimistFi has argued that Stanley Black & Decker's equity value depends on proving that the profit and cash recovery is structural. The quarter gives partial support. Tools & Outdoor organic growth was led by power tools, and its margin gain reflected productivity and mix as well as refunds.
The guidance changes are large at the midpoints. Adjusted EPS guidance of $5.95 to $6.25 replaces $5.20 to $5.80. That lifts the midpoint from $5.50 to $6.10, or 10.9%. GAAP EPS guidance of $5.45 to $5.85 replaces $4.60 to $5.45, moving its midpoint from $5.03 to $5.65.
The company says the new midpoints represent growth over 2025 of 113% for GAAP EPS and 31% for adjusted EPS.
Cash flow shows the biggest change. Free cash flow guidance of $1.0 billion to $1.2 billion replaces $600 million to $800 million. The midpoint rises from $700 million to $1.1 billion, or 57.1%. The company said the new range includes the tariff refund realized so far this year and projected taxes and fees tied to the sale of its Consolidated Aerospace Manufacturing (CAM) business.
Third-quarter free cash flow was $585.0 million, up from $155.3 million a year earlier, on cash from operations of $658.5 million. Year to date, free cash flow is $835.9 million against an outflow of $195.0 million a year earlier.
The caveat is the refunds. They lifted gross margin and EPS in the quarter and are built into the cash flow range, so the reported strength is not a clean read on underlying operations. The company's risk language lists the amount and timing of any tariff refunds among factors that could change results.
Engineered Fastening was weaker. Segment sales fell 21%, with the CAM sale subtracting 22%, while organic revenue rose 2%. Adjusted segment margin was 11.7%, down 110 basis points, and the company cited weak automotive demand. The quarter also carried a $20.4 million loss on the sale of a small business in the segment.
Buybacks and balance sheet
The company repurchased approximately 2.5 million shares for approximately $250 million in the third quarter. That fully used the $500 million authorization approved in April 2026. The board approved the new authorization on Oct. 29, and it expires Oct. 29, 2029. That amount is a ceiling, not money spent.
Diluted weighted-average shares were 148.63 million in the quarter, down from 151.96 million a year earlier. Cash and equivalents were $741.2 million on Oct. 3, up from $280.1 million on Jan. 3. Inventories fell to $3.84 billion from $4.16 billion.
What's next
The company is hosting an investor webcast at 8:00 am ET on Nov. 4. It said it will discuss the assumptions behind its guidance.
The result to watch is how much of the raised ranges rests on refunds rather than organic growth. If the assumptions lean on refunds, the structural-recovery case weakens. If they rest on organic growth and productivity gains, it strengthens.
