Why it matters
Buybacks are doing part of the work. Diluted weighted average shares fell to 33.3 million from 38.1 million. In OptimistFi's calculation, that left EPS down 13.8% while net income fell 24.5%.
Adjusted net income also fell, to $170.3 million from $190.9 million. The adjusted EPS gain therefore came alongside a smaller share count.
The release also gives the debt backdrop for the buyback pace. The covenant leverage ratio was 2.71x against a credit agreement maximum of 3.75x, with $4.3 billion of non-vehicle debt outstanding. As of Oct. 28, $1.4 billion remained available under the program.
OptimistFi has argued that scale, After-Sales and finance and insurance keep profits stable as new-vehicle margins moderate. Parts and service gross profit rose 3.3% to $616.6 million, or 51.1% of total gross profit, and AutoNation Finance income reached $15.4 million from $1.5 million.
The weaker side is just as clear. Operating income fell 15.5%, same-store gross profit fell 4.7%, finance and insurance gross profit fell 6.9%, and new-vehicle gross profit per unit slipped to $2,176 from $2,281. The evidence is mixed for the case.

What's next
AutoNation's next quarterly report will test whether growth in After-Sales and AutoNation Finance can keep offsetting lower vehicle unit sales and margins, with adjusted net income as the measure to watch.
